- The 2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health cited the following:
- The rate of drug use for people aged 12 or older is 8% of the population
- Marijuana is the most common used illicit drug with over 15.2 million users
- 1.9 million people uses cocaine
- 6.2 million people abuse prescription medications
- 10 million people aged 12 or older admitted to driving under the influence of illicit drugs in the last year
- 23.3% of Americans binge drink
- 41.1% of young adults aged 18 to 25 binge drink
- 6.9% of Americans drink heavily (this means they binge drink at least 5 times in a month.
- 14.5% of young adults aged 18 to 25 drink heavily
- Around 13% of Americans drove under the influence of alcohol sometime in the last year.
- 14.6% of youths aged 12 to 17 use alcohol
- Youth binge and heavy drinking rates were 8.8% and 2%, respectively
- National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates that close to 20% of people (48 million) over the age of 12 in the U.S. have used prescription drugs for non-medical purposes 1
