Our Approach

Our approach at Blackwater Outdoor Experiences is based on the belief that our program is not a solution, but rather a powerful, positive first step as part of a long term treatment program. We see our trips as an opportunity for individuals to "re-boot" themselves and start upon a path towards a happier and healthier life.Climbing

Blackwater Outdoor Experiences provides challenging experiences in a wilderness setting, where individuals are given time and space away from the stressful environment of our fast-paced society.  Participants are afforded a quiet place to reflect on who they are, what led up to their current situation, and where they would like to be in the future.

Nature serves as a backdrop for counseling and metaphors for real life abound in wilderness travel, adventure-based initiatives, and the natural world.  The outdoors provides an excellent therapeutic and educational setting because consequences are both immediate and natural.  In this way, participants are challenged to take responsibility for their choices and behaviors.

Participants learn, through repeated experiences during the wilderness expedition, that they are responsible for outcomes in their lives, not an external force.  With this knowledge, participants are empowered to make changes and encouraged to look inward rather than outward for control in their lives.  Facing and overcoming challenges presented through back country travel, gives participants the opportunity to learn about their strengths and practice healthier coping skills.  The external stressors inherent in living outdoors, gives participants a safe place to practice new ways of handling difficulties.  These new skills can then be put to use in helping them overcome difficulties in their personal lives and gives them confidence to work toward their future goals.
